20 Questions with Guyer Soccer Coach Mandy Hall

20 Questions with Guyer Soccer Coach Mandy Hall

by Steve Gamel

As the soccer season slowly draws to a close, we wanted to check in with Guyer girls soccer coach Mandy Hall. This is Hall’s first season at Guyer after successful stints at Lake Dallas and Braswell. Coach Hall sat down with us recently to play an old-fashioned game of 20 Questions.

Q: What do you love most about soccer?
A: It’s a game that I grew up playing and that my older brother played. I just like the strategy and tactical side of it along with the athleticism required to do it well. It’s the full package.

Q: Tell us about your time in college?
A: (she played goalie for the University of North Texas). It was an experience unlike anything else. To be able to compete with people from all over to make the one team that represents the school was fun.

Q: If you could coach any sport besides soccer, what would it be?
A: I’d do an indoor sport. I’ve always liked basketball, but I was never great at it.

Q: What is your favorite sport to watch besides soccer?
A: I like Winter Olympics sports like snowboarding or speed skating.

Q: What do you do for fun?
A: I love the city of Denton, so I’m usually around doing stuff there. I live off the square, so I feel really connected. I also do a lot with my church, and I like to travel and visit my friends.

Q: What do you like about coaching at Guyer?
A: Guyer is a 6A, but it’s not massive so you can get to know the kids. Ever since I first stepped foot on the campus, I’ve enjoyed getting to know these girls.

Q: If you had to karaoke one song, what would it be?
A: I think I’d have to go old-school to get the crowd into it, so I’d have to say a Brittney Spears hit. I think she’s a pretty solid karaoke hit.

Q: Which would you rather fight, a bear or a lion?
A: A bear. I feel like if they stand straight up, they’d be slower than a lion.

Q: If you were stuck in an elevator, who would you want there with you?
A: I fear of being stuck in an elevator, so if there’s a chance to use the stairs, I will 100 percent use the stairs. I’d rather be in there with my older brother.

Q: What is the ugliest thing you own?
A: I have a pair of white high-top shoes that are velcro. I think they’re great, but I get made fun of a lot for them.

Q: What is the one thing you have never bought and never will buy?
A: A visor. I can’t get on board with those at all. I’d never wear one.

Q: If you had a million dollars, how would you spend it?
A: I spend all that money on plane tickets and travel wherever I could.

Q: What is the funniest coach at Guyer?
A: Jonathan Ponsonby.

Q: Captain America or Iron Man?
A: Iron Man.

Q: What is the worst trait you have as a coach?
A: If I am giving them a big speech at halftime, I have no clue how to end it.

Q: If you could time travel, where would you go?
A: I would probably go to London and experience a childhood there.

Q: If you couldn’t coach at all, what profession would you choose?
A: I guess I would get into consulting. I have some friends who do that, and their jobs seem pretty cool.

Q: Do you have any phobias?
A: I am claustrophobic, and I’m also deathly and borderline irrational about snakes.

Q: What’s the one thing no one knows about you?
A: When I was a kid, I used to really be into crafting trends like make jewelry at home kits or easy bake ovens.

Q: What’s the last movie you saw at the movie theater?
A: Proud Mary
