Foursome Represents Lady Falcons on All-District List

by Steve Gamel

With a new head coach and several younger players stepping into prominent roles, perhaps the odds were stacked against the Lake Dallas volleyball team this past season. The Lady Falcons didn’t waste time proving any skeptics wrong as they finished third in District 14-5A and advanced to the playoffs.

Late last month, four Lake Dallas players were recognized when the 14-5A All-District team was announced.

Kasey Bortnem and Bailey Dolezalek were named to the district’s first team while teammates Mallory Klingele and Georgia Walk made second team. The Lady Falcons didn’t earn a single superlative honor in a district that was highlighted by eventual state champion Prosper.
Bortnem, a setter, finished with 915 assists to go with 88 kills. Bolezalek, an outside and right-side hitter, racked up a team-leading 398 kills to go with 271 assists. Klingele had 242 kills and 36 blocks as the team’s middle blocker while Walk, an outside hitter, finished with 219 kills.

Lake Dallas was a very smart team on the court, and that showed throughout the season. That magic couldn’t continue in the postseason as the Lady Falcons fell to Frisco Liberty 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 in the first round.

Despite the early playoff exit, all signs point to Lake Dallas being a major player moving forward. New coach Angel Mauterer won two district titles while at Carrollton Creekview and took her team to the playoffs 10 times.
