A Healthy Mouth is a Sign of a Healthy Body

by Susan Neuhalfen

The mouth is a window into the health of the body. It can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection. For example, systemic diseases—those that affect the entire body, such as diabetes, AIDS and Sjögren’s syndrome—may first become apparent because of mouth lesions or other oral problems. Researchers have also found that periodontitis (the advanced form of gum disease that can cause tooth loss) is linked with other health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and bacterial pneumonia.   Likewise, pregnant women with periodontitis may be at increased risk of delivering preterm and/or low-birth-weight infants.

“Everything is connected to the teeth,” said Dr. Alexander. “That’s why people need to put more value on their oral health and how it affects the body.”

That also means not skimping when it comes to dental care.

“I always give my patients a very low price,” said Dr. Alexander. “I really don’t have any room to budge unless I use cheaper products and I refuse to do that.”

Often patients ask for discounts on things like crowns which would be possible if she ordered them from China, but she refuses to use an inferior product for her patients. Dr. Alexander emphasizes that dental health is directly related to overall wellness and when you go “bargain-basement” hunting for your health, it can be detrimental to your body.

The folks at Starshine Dental “practice from the heart” which means they are committed to their patients’ overall health and well-being.

“Our patients are like family and so we take care of them like family,” said Dr. Alexander.

In the spirit of “practicing from the heart” as they do, Starshine Dentistry is a supporting sponsor
of the Spirit of Christmas in Lake Cities. For information on how you can help, go to lcspiritofchristmas.org.
