Jason Roemer Leads Lake Dallas Into New Season

by Steve Gamel

For the third straight season, the Lake Dallas volleyball team has a new head coach leading the charge. The Lady Falcons, who opened their season in early August, are being led by Texas Girls Coaches Association president Jason Roemer for the 2018-19 season. Roemer, who most recently coached Fredericksburg and Kerrville Tivy on deep playoff runs, replaced Angel Mauterer after she took an assistant job in Prosper after one season with the Lady Falcons.

Mauterer had replaced longtime coach Heather Van Noy, who left following the 2016 season to take the reins at Guyer. Roemer is expected to have his hands full as the Lady Eagles not only graduated a strong senior class led by Kasey Bortnem and Bailey Dolezaleck but also must prepare for a new District 8-5A slate that features Denton, Ryan, The Colony, Braswell, Little Elm and Justin Northwest. Five of those teams, including Lake Dallas, made the playoffs last year.

But the cupboard isn’t bare at Lake Dallas. Athletes who could make an immediate impact include Bailey Avila, Macey Banks, Ruth Forsan, and Candice Collier.

“The district race is going to be really competitive, and there’s not really a clear-cut favorite,” Roemer told the Denton Record-Chronicle. “Talking to the kids, they’re hungry to win a playoff game. There are a lot of ‘bi-district finalist’ banners in the gym. It will be pretty satisfying for these kids when we win a playoff game, and that’s my goal right now.

“Why not win a playoff game? Once you get over that hurdle and the expectations change a little bit, I think we’re sitting on something good here.”
