Lake Cities Senior Citizens: Come Join Them Every Tuesday

by Steve Gamel

If you are a senior citizen looking to get out of the house and meet new people, eat good food, play games, and have some great laughs, look no further than right here in your own community.

The Lake Cities Senior Citizens is a group of men and women over the age of 60 who meet every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the community center in Lake Dallas City Hall – and they’re looking for someone just like you to join in on the fun. The group, which was started 12 years ago by then-Mayor Tony Marino, is open to any senior citizen who lives in Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek, Corinth, and Shady Shores.

They play games like bingo and Chickenfoot Dominoes on alternating weeks. There is also a potluck lunch.

“We have about 12 people there every week, and they enjoy it,” said Digger Crofford, the group’s unofficial director and liaison to the city. “Someone had said in the past that we are too aggressive, but what they meant was, we play cut-throat [on the games]. We don’t take it easy on the newcomers.”

Crofford is one of many people, including current Lake Dallas Mayor, Michael Barnhart, who has worked tirelessly to promote the group and draw in more visitors. She joined two years ago, and in that time, she’s managed to get several area businesses to regularly donate door prizes, money for special events, and lunch sponsorships.
