As I sit writing this letter, I am heading to NYC to celebrate my daughter’s college graduation.  Like many of you celebrating the graduation season, it’s an important time to pause and recognize the hard work, determination and achievement of our graduates. I am also grateful to be seated next to my mother as we travel together to celebrate Mother’s Day in New York.  These opportunities to share special May moments with family and loved ones can bring us so much joy.

May has always been a special month to me because I have a birthday that always falls around Memorial Day weekend.  While my birthday felt more important to me as a child, I now realize the Memorial Day remembrance of our fallen armed forces heroes is far more significant.  Now in May, I set my sights toward this patriotic weekend as our nation lifts up our service men and women and honors the sacrifices they made to protect our country.

Memorial Day weekend also seems to mark of the beginning of summertime.  With the weather warming, everyone begins to rev up for the summer!  It’s time to de-winterize the boat, enroll the kids for summer camps, and start making plans for a summertime excursion.  While we begin to make our plans, let’s remember the beautiful lake community where we live and the fun that awaits us in our own backyard.

Recently, I spent time at Lakeview Marina in Lake Dallas getting to know the Drozd family. While I enjoy meeting so many Lake Cities residents, it was terrific to meet this family that works alongside each other year-round to manage and care for their marina on Lake Lewisville.

As I toured Lakeview Marina with my guide, Thomas, the sights, sounds, and smells of the lake make me long for a weekend on the lake with an ice chest full of sodas, sandwich fixin’s and snacks.  Along with a full tank of gas, perfectly inflated water inner tube, and a group of friends, this makes for a perfect weekend of Lake Cities fun!

We need to remember how fortunate we are to live in this lake community and have access to beautiful parks, recreation areas and a clean, full (not too full) lake.  Also, let’s remember our blessings that we live in this great nation which is served and protected by brave men and women in the armed services.

So, as we begin to set out to enjoy summertime in this great community and great nation, let’s share this time and pause in remembrance of our fallen heroes this Memorial Day.

Congratulations to the Class of 2016!
Happy Memorial Day!
