Take A Deep Breath And Then Swing!

Make the Move Team

I try to learn something new each day, whether it be in my personal life or for my job as a real estate agent. One of the best ways to do that is to keep my eyes and ears open, because you never know where that next lesson will come from.

For example, while at our Denton office the other day, I struck up a conversation with a cute-as-a-button 8-year-old boy who was there with one of our team members. Anyone who knows me will agree that I never miss an opportunity to talk to a child; they are full of knowledge, happiness, and always have something neat to say. This young man was no different.

“You know, you just gotta take a deep breath before you swing,” he said in the middle of our conversation.

Let me preface this by saying that he was sharing his take on the game of golf, which he was trying to persuade me to play more of if I wanted to be better at it. He was so cute, and truer words have never been spoken about my golf game. But to me, what he said was also a fantastic analogy for life and could apply to literally anything.

Don’t just go out there in life and wing it – instead, take a deep breath, get centered, and then swing. You’ll find, more often than not, that you’ll gain instant confidence and succeed in whatever you’re trying to do.

I share this story because it is time for our kids to head back to school, and if you notice, they’re all doing so with the belief that they can do anything. For example, my little buddy believes deep down that he will be a professional golfer someday, and no one is going to tell him any differently. I love that. The problem is, that mentality rarely sticks with us as we age. We were all like that at one point – anything was possible, so long as we reached for the stars. Somewhere along the way, though, we got older and allowed the world to start telling us what we could or couldn’t do.

For many of us, we lost that magical piece of childhood where nothing stood in our way. We are afraid to start over, we struggle to aspire to be more, and we are always second-guessing ourselves. Even when we do figure it all out, we overcomplicate the matter.

According to my 8-year-old friend, getting back on track is as simple as breathing before you swing.

It seems like great advice. So will you try it?
